STUTTGART, Germany -- Serena Williams has pulled out of next week's Kremlin Cup because of an ankle injury, the WTA Tour said Friday.
Williams, the U.S. Open champion, will drop from the No. 1 ranking Monday after losing to Li Na in the second round of the Porsche Grand Prix this week. Jelena Jankovic will regain the top spot.
Williams also pulled out of the doubles competition in Stuttgart shortly before she was due to team up with her sister Venus on Thursday.
